The album of photographs taken by SS men on the Birkenau platform in 1944, found by a survivor who recognised her own family in it.
In 1945 a survivor named Lili Jacob found, in a camp barracks, an album of photographs taken by SS men on the Birkenau platform in May 1944, and recognised her own family among the people being selected. Peter Hellman’s text accompanies the roughly two hundred images, which are the only known photographic record of the process from arrival to selection.

She found pictures of herself, her relatives and others from the village where they had lived, who were all dead. In 1944 they were liquidating – it’s a horrific word – they were murdering the Hungarian Jews, and here you have an album of close to 200 photographs that were taken by SS men who were on the platform that day in Birkenau [an Auschwitz sub-camp], documenting the selection of Jews for the gas chamber.
