Selected Short Stories

Rabindranath Tagore

Tagore's Bengali stories of village life, poverty and family, from the writer who was the first non-European to win the Nobel in Literature.

Tagore wrote short fiction for Bengali periodicals for decades, and these stories, The Postmaster among them, are the form at its best: village life, the small cruelties of caste and household, women’s confinement, and endings that withhold consolation. He was the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, in 1913.

No, but we were part of the British colony so we had lots of connection with English literature and I don’t mention the local language because it doesn’t make any sense to you. But local literature is more influential for me than European literature – Rabindranath Tagore stories, for example, about poor families and their struggle with their life.
