The Honest Rainmaker

A. J. Liebling · 1953

Liebling's portrait of Colonel John R. Stingo, racetrack columnist and confidence man, assembled largely from his own talk.

Colonel John R. Stingo was not a colonel and that was not his name. Liebling met him in a Manhattan hotel bar and let him talk, and the result is a portrait of a racetrack columnist and lifelong operator whose ventures included selling rain to farmers on terms calculated so that the weather could not lose him money.
