A Little History of British Gardening

Jenny Uglow follows British gardening from Roman courtyards to the modern suburban plot, through monastery plots, Tudor knots, landscape parks and the nurserymen who supplied them. She is drawn to the eccentrics, including the landowners who hired hermits to live decoratively in their grounds, and uses the garden as a way of telling a national history through plants.
