The Soviet leader setting out, while still in power, what he thought he was reforming and why.
Gorbachev wrote this in 1987, while General Secretary and mid-reform, which is what makes it unusual: a leader setting out his programme before anyone knew how it would end. It moves between domestic restructuring, his meetings with foreign leaders, and his reading of the wider world. Two of its words, perestroika and glasnost, passed into every other language.
